The Prodigal Dad Luke 15:1, 11-31

Notes on Luke 10 Good Smaritan

·       The lawyer cites Deuteronomy 6:5 and  Leviticus 19:18 in the Old Testament. He may have been reading from a phylactery, a small box that some Jews wore. It contained a summary of the law.

·       Lawyer helped interpret the law, which included religious law.

·       Road to and from Jerusalem was notoriously dangerous.

·       Priest and Levite may suspected that the injured man was bait, set by a band of robbers.

·       Priest—probably travelling to Jerusalem to serve in the temple. Touching a dead body would defile him, and prevent him from serving.

·       Levite—of the priestly family.

·       Priest and Levite are meant to be seen as the good guys in any story. White hat types.

·       Samaritan’s were a reliogous people group, who despised and were despised by the Jewish people.

·       Oil and wine—medicine. Not very good medicine, but that is what they used.
